Mermaids should have been kept alive. They should have remained as the most beautiful ornaments of our dreams. However, we have eradicated them by no longer remembering, no longer mentioning their names and no longer believing that one day the mermaids would once again emerge from the blue water of the Aegean Sea. Our dreams no longer have the same richness as they had in times past. Of course we have discovered many new fairy tales, but none of them provides beauty and reverie equal to that of the mermaids. We should have kept the mermaids alive.

Puppets are very much like mermaids. If only we believe that they are real, mention their names and are connected to them by love, they can survive. Puppets are as concrete as life itself and as abstract as well. We need puppets; we need them to enrich our lives, we need them to ornament our dreams, we need them so that our children will be able to grow up with love and in peace. That’s why we are keeping the puppets alive in Izmir.

Let the puppets remind us of mermaids and mermaids remind us of the puppets from now on. Let them always be remembered together from now on, at least in Izmir, where mermaids were born.

Who knows, maybe mermaids are still alive together with the puppets in Izmir!
